Mama’s Rice Pudding.

Women often ask me if there was one thing to share with a postpartum mama what it would be.

Well there are so many things of course, like how to protect your sacred space, how to create healthy boundaries, and how to allow yourself as the postpartum mother to be cared for, rest and care for your newborn undisturbed.

But the one thing I would love to share right now which is something that I think would be so amazing for every postpartum mama to receive is a simple dish.

It is a simple recipe of deliciousness. You can make this for a postpartum loved one and drop it off with out even going inside. I have see this bowl of magic being devoured by so many mamas hours after birth.

If you happen to be invited to attend a sister’s birth this is a great meal to prepare whilst birth is unfolding.

After the magnificent surrendering and opening through the birthing process, what we are looking for to support the mothers system in her first few weeks postpartum is warm, grounding, soothing foods that don’t challenge her digestive system and warm her internally again.

This recipe is inspired by the wisdom of Ayurveda and there are many versions of it.

You can subtract any of the spices if you don’t have them available but some spice is important as their purpose is to bring warming qualities to the mothers system.

Ingredients:

1 cup white jasmine rice

6-8 cups of water (depends on how think you like the final mixture)

1/2 cup of ghee or coconut oil (I way prefer ghee and carry homemade ghee in a jar around with me)

1x tsp cinnamon powder

1x tsp ginger powder

1x tsp cardamom powder

1x tsp ground black pepper

1/4x tsp clove powder or 6 whole cloves

a generous pinch of saffron

1/3 - 1/2 cup of coconut sugar, jaggery or molasses

Method:

Put the rice, ghee and water in a big pot.

Add the spices except the saffron.

Cook on a slow heat for a long time … the process takes a few hours.

Once the rice has cooked down into a lovely soft creamy texture, add the saffron and sweetener of your choice.

Cook for another 30 minutes or so.

Serve warm with another dollop of ghee and/or some coconut milk.

Another amazing thing to serve with this is stewed fruit. (Will share that glorious recipe another time).

Enjoy beautiful mama goddess.

With love and gratitude to all the mothers of this world.
